Laura Dern finds that every role—even the high-strung ones—manages to “feed the soul.”
But as someone who found standardized testing far easier than the grind of adulthood, I catch myself leaning into Dern’s words: about maintaining luminous skin, how meditation helps on set, and why I should finally make time to see the dance documentary, The publicist’s phrase of introduction—“Laura, meet Laura”—sticks in my head, as if I were encountering some future, more grounded version of myself.
“By the way, literally my yoga practice has become, like, 11 minutes in the morning because I don’t have the time,” Dern says, encouragingly. “You have 11 minutes. You could hold a plank and do a couple sun salutations and meditate for even a few minutes and have a very centered day—as opposed to the day where you wake up to your phone and you’re checking a hundred texts, and then you go into the newsfeed and see all these hopeful promises that stress you out.” See? This woman is insightful.
How has being a mother shaped your sense of activism? I see that you and your daughter are often at marches together. Truth be told, she's now bringing me. She was very involved in March for Our Lives, and had a friend who experienced the Parkland shooting. Suddenly it's your kid teaching you what has to change. That's been amazing, as they teach me every day in a million other areas.
