Commentary: Chicago is amid uber-competitive citywide campaigns related to the April 4 runoff. Voters are being bombarded with mailers, brochures, posters, yard signs, and TV and social media ads. Campaign buttons, not so much.

Harold Washington campaign buttons displayed in 2015 at the Harold Washington Library Center in Chicago.

Buttons later evolved into tintype pins, like those pushing Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 presidential campaign, according to the exhibit. Then came celluloid types, bearing the face of the candidate, versions of which are still in use today.I am a button lover and collector. As a reporter, I can’t wear them, but I grab every one I can on the campaign trail. Those metal slivers of history signify pride in a political cause and identity. They remind us of what was, and what might have been.

“Yeah, you are right. They’re not as prevalent anymore. They do seem to pop up during the big moments of politics,” Bowen said. Then-mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot pins a campaign button on commuter Malik Daniel, 22, of Chicago, at the CTA 95th Street Red Line station in Chicago on March 27, 2019. He covered Minnesota U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone’s reelection campaign, his first ever reporting job, for the National Journal publication The Hotline.“So that’s one of the first buttons I ever got. And it was sort of like, ‘Well, I want to remember this guy, cause, you know, he was admirable.’ I thought he was very brave voting against the Iraq War,” Bowen said.A green-and-white campaign pin bears the simple declaration “Wellstone!” from Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone’s reelection campaign in 2002.
