Volleyball pioneer will be honored Friday night alongside soccer star Buehler Van Hollebeke and ex-Charger Gates

Make no mistake, Laurel Brassey was a skilled volleyball player, a setter, server and defender at the National Team level.

She’s in the San Diego State Hall of Fame, was part of the first Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2017, took home the USVBA’s All-Time Great Player Award in 1991 and was a member of the USVBA 75Plus, she won 280 matches with her teams making six NCAA Tournament appearances in 17 years as women’s volleyball coach at the University of New Mexico. She was a two-time WAC Coach of the Year.

“For sure, playing with the men made me a better player, absolutely strengthened my game. Back in ’74, there weren’t that many opportunities. Playing with the men pushed me into the spotlight.” Craig Beery, a member of the ’73 title team, had transitioned to coaching and was an assistant on Henn’s staff.

Brassey Iversen, who lives now in Idaho, might never had played for the men’s team had there been an opportunity on the women’s side. “Still, I was terrified and overwhelmed by Jack Henn. If I saw him on campus, I’d cross the street so as to not talk to him. But when Craig Beery approached me about playing, I had to try.”But the women’s National Team was calling. Brassey Iversen left school and made the ’80 Olympic team, a team that didn’t play because of the boycott of the Moscow Games.
