Lavender is a low-maintenance plant but it does need some attention in early September to keep it looking its best
Lavender is a popular garden plant in the UK. It has an amazing scent, attracts bees and butterflies to your garden and even repels unwanted visitors like mosquitos, fleas and moths. I’d also low maintenance, meaning you don’t need to do much to reap the benefits. However, it does need cutting back around once a year. And the time to do it is late August or early September – ie, now!
Sean Lade, Director of Easy Garden Irrigation agrees. He told Ideal Home magazine: 'The best time to prune lavender in the UK is in late summer or early autumn after the plant has finished blooming. This allows the plant to recover before winter and encourages fuller growth in the next year. Monty Don advises cutting back your lavender ‘ to a good compact shape’. But he adds, ‘be sure to leave some new shoots on each stem – lavender will often not regrow from bare wood. These new shoots will grow fast and provide an attractive and healthy cover to protect the plant in winter and provide the basis of next year’s display.
