Indicted former Galveston deputy had history of excessive force before inmate's death, lawsuit says
A file photo pictures a deputy standing guard with his radio attached to his collar at the Galveston County Jail.More than a year after a former Galveston County Sheriff’s Office deputy, new filings in a civil lawsuit against him and top county officials allege he had a history of using excessive force dating back years before the fatal encounter, both at the jail and while working in county schools.
Wuneburger, who was fired after being indicted, has not yet gone to trial on the manslaughter charges. In November, his attorneys asked for the indictment against him to be thrown out. He’s scheduled to appear in a Galveston County District Court in January. Since 2013, Wuneburger had about 33 incidents that required him to complete and file a use of force report to his supervisors, according to the lawsuit.
In 2016, for instance, Wuneburger was identified as the deputy who tackled a La Marque High School student during a fight at the school in 2016, the lawsuit asserts. The tackle was caught on camera and led to complaints from the girl’s family, who said she suffered a badly bruised elbow from the takedown. The sheriff’s office cleared the deputy of wrongdoing, and never named him publicly, according to The Galveston County Daily News.
Wuneburger also filed six reports about his actions against Galveston County jail inmates between April and November 2020, the lawsuit asserts.
