The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announces that it has topped 72,000 missionaries currently in the field and missions expansions to accommodate the rising numbers.

36 new missions across the globe will come on line next year, including three in Utah.The change is also in response to the growing tally of missionaries, who currently number than 72,000.Included in the newly announced missions are nine in Africa, where the church expanding rapidly; six in South America; and 10 in the United States. Three new Utah missions — Salt Lake City East, Saratoga Springs and Spanish Fork — are among those due to come on line next July.

“We are witnessing an increased enthusiasm for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world,” apostle Quentin Cook said in the release. “These new missions, spread all around the world, will be a blessing locally as we desire to have more missionaries supporting the units of the church.
