Our gardening columnist Joshua Siskin shares tips for gardeners.

The rain we enjoyed this past winter – and into the spring – has been a boon not only to our gardens and plants but to our souls. How long has it been since we enjoyed such an abundance of precipitation? It seems like forever.

Perhaps there is a lesson here from which we can derive solace and hope. Last fall, the vast majority of so-called experts were predicting a fourth straight year of drought for Southern California. And then we get a winter like this. It is proof that change for the better can come quickly and that optimism and faith are no less justifiable than doom and gloom.

“Dry Climate Gardening” by Noelle Johnson, offers detailed instructions for the beginning gardener on how to garden in areas such as our own where rainfall comes almost entirely during the winter months. In truth, this volume would be useful in any climate since it provides an elementary explanation of everything a novice gardener needs to know, from soil types and pruning tools to water-saving practices and pest control.

The author suggests a simple technique for “portable drip irrigation” through the use of a repurposed one-gallon plastic jug in which five holes are made with a nail. “Fill with water and place next to the plant you want to be watered. The water will slowly drip out, giving your plant the water it needs.” If you plant a woody perennial after temperatures begin to warm up, you are advised to build a basin around your shrub or tree with the edges or berm of the basin three inches tall.

I would add that building a berm a few inches away from the trunk of a tree or stems of a shrub is also a wise practice since it will prevent water from settling on the crown – where wood meets roots – since it is an area that is highly susceptible to rot brought on by standing water in that area. Another strategy mentioned for sun protection is the placement of a patio umbrella over newly planted selections as a first stage in acclimation to your garden’s microclimate.
