But Turner, a former teacher in Trenton, is right to start this conversation and encourage everyone to think big. “I just feel we need to go bold now,” she told us on Tuesday. “We’ve got to save our students. We can’t just continue doing what we’ve always done. And we have the money to do it.” Vin Gopal, chair of the Senate Education Committee, says that while a lot of details need to be figured out, he will put Turner’s bill up for debate and testimony. “I absolutely think it’s worth having a discussion on,” he agreed.
“Just the longer school day itself adds weeks of learning more than traditional public counterparts,” she said. “When you augment that with a longer school year, it becomes even more clear.”
