Parting ways with Ryan Johansen and Matt Duchene sends a strong message to the remaining Nashville roster. So does bringing in Ryan O’Reilly and Luke Schenn. It’s a new era in Nashville, writes PierreVLeBrun. Just how Barry Trotz wants it.
Trotz also saw a team that had become stagnant, with too many players happy to be Predators and living in Nashville — but not part of a culture that fostered the kind of mission statement Trotz envisions as far as becoming a championship team one day.So does bringing in O’Reilly and Schenn.“I needed a change of culture,” Trotz said. “Some of our core got a little bit comfortable.”
On the ice, Trotz views Schenn as someone who can slide onto any of the three defensive pairings, including playing with Josi, just like Schenn did with“I needed someone who can recognize those moments where, you know what, you’re going to leave Josi alone,” Trotz said. “Because those guys get targeted. They play big minutes. The one thing Luke does, he recognizes moments. If your team is getting pushed out of the game a little bit, he recognizes that.
The Leafs tried to bring him back but for cap reasons couldn’t compete with what Nashville and a few other teams put on the table. “Every team that has had Luke over the last few years understands that he’s not sexy analytically but man does he bring a lot of intangibles, the leadership piece — he gets it,” Trotz said. “He’s a little bit old school where he understands the mentorship and the work that goes into it.Ryan O’Reilly and Luke Schenn
And O’Reilly, of course, was a no-brainer. Leafs GM Brad Treliving tried really hard to bring him back, too, and“I really felt up front I needed someone who could mentor all our forwards,” Trotz said.
