“He showed them no mercy whilst he stabbed them hundreds of times. He then attempted to leave the country and when arrested, he provided a fabricated account in an attempt to absolve himself of responsibility for his actions.'
Dr Barlow for the prosecution and Dr Lucy Bacon for the defence agree Tipping has had an enduring psychotic illness. He was always fearful of being taken back to hospital. His parents had been engaged in getting him to hospital twice and his father once restrained him with handcuffs. Tipping and his father allegedly had along standing pattern of conflict. This had increased since lockdown.
There were a large number of deep stab wounds, including to both eyes Many of the injuries were caused after death. There were bruises to Ms Livesey's shoulder and a fractured collarbone, likely to have been caused with some kind of weapon. Dr Armour examined Anthony's body. He weighted around nine stone. She said he sustained a multiplicity of stab, slash and incised wounds, with the vast majority of the injuries caused in life. There were three 'very unusual' wounds to the head. The jugular vain was damaged. There was damage to internal organs.
He was told he could not stay at the Premier Inn that night as it was full. While Christopher Johnson helped him find alternative accommodation he received a call from the police, asking him to keep him at the hotel until they arrived. Police attended the house and found downstairs to be immaculate. They found the bodies upstairs. Tony had a knife in his hand. They found other items including a hammer on the floor. Police recovered a black gilet from the defendant with blood on the front and back. On November 20, at 930pm, police recovered Tipping's car from the Raddison Blu hotel at Manchester Airport. They also found Anthony Tipping's bank card.
When compared to the number of injuries found on Mr Tipping's body, Ms Jones said her findings support the view that his clothing was likely to have been pulled up and at some point. She also supported the view Anthony Tipping had been upright and walked through an area of blood in his socks. Catherine Riding said in the pub her sister said she didn't want to go home. "This could be my last gin", Tricia said.Deborah Littlejohn, a neighbour, said she could tell whether Tipping was on his medication or not as he would be either withdrawn or more outgoing.
The next day she saw Tricia had been active on Facebook an hour earlier so thought everything was alright. There is some evidence Lee had access to his mum's Facebook account. Mrs Wells messaged Tony to check on them after the upset the previous evening.Tracey Ainsworth, barmaid at the Swan pub, knew Tony and Tricia. She spoke to them in the beer garden on a Friday in sunny weather. She thinks it was around 6-8 weeks before they died.
Diane Byrne completed a carers assessment for Tricia in the home and had no concerns. She organised a Carers Payment. On November 9, she phoned the house phone and Lee Tipping told her his mum was no longer his carer. He shouted at Ms Byrne. She called Tricia and explained what had happened. The annual review was carried out and Tricia said Lee was becoming more unwell and lacked insight.
A neighbour described Cann Bridge Street as a friendly street and said everyone gets on. She never heard any arguments. At the end of 2019 she said she saw Tipping in a pub and he seemed different, really well, after changing his medication. She said she never saw him being violent and he was really worried about being returned as an inpatient.
