Exclusive: Leeds Rhinos are at threat of losing one of their top players to a Super League rival.
Leigh Leopards have emerged as shock contenders to sign Leeds Rhinos back-rower Rhyse Martin. Rugby League Live can reveal that the Leopards are leading the chase to sign the Papua New Guinea international, who is off-contract at the end of the season.
The Leopards are understood to have tabled a lucrative offer for the goal-kicking forward and sources claim they stand a good chance of getting a deal over the line, despite interest from other clubs. Leeds are among those clubs and they remain keen to retain him, but there is now a viable threat that Martin's time at Headingley could come to an end once the current season comes to a close.
Martin has arguably been Leeds' best signing since their last Grand Final victory in 2017. Since joining the club in 2019 he has gone on to make 118 appearances, in which time he has scored 934 points courtesy of his prolific exploits from the kicking tee, as well as 33 tries. He was part of the Leeds side that won the Challenge Cup in 2020 and has been among the club's most consistent players since his arrival.
Talks with Leeds are understood to have started months ago, long before the arrival of new Sporting Director, Ian Blease. However, an agreement wasn't reached and that saw Martin head to the open market. Leigh are now understood to have offered a significant contract. Blease, who doesn't start at Leeds until Monday, may be powerless in stopping Martin from departing.
Leigh are looking for a left-side back-rower, with Kai O'Donnell leaving at the end of the season to join North Queensland Cowboys. The Leopards have a strong connection to Papua New Guinea with the likes of Lachlan Lam and Edwin Ipape already in their squad while Adrian Lam is head coach. Martin has been a regular for the Kumuls during his time with the Rhinos, making nine appearances.
