Arthur is edging towards staying at Headingley, but the Rhinos need to know for how long.
There's barely a day that goes by when Brad Arthur's future isn't a topic of conversation and this week has certainly been no different. The Leeds Rhinos head coach is almost halfway through his initial agreement with the Headingley club, but all focus is on whether that stay will be extended.
As time has gone on, Arthur has sounded like a man more open to staying longer-term, even if he hasn't said it as such. The Rhinos, impressed with the early impact he has had, would like him to stay. His influence is already clear and the prospect of him continuing that work moving forward is an outcome everyone associated with the Rhinos will be hoping for. However, it can't be at all costs.
It's been well documented that salary cap space is tight this year, so rebuilding the squad for Arthur won't be a quick fix. Next year, however, will see significant salary cap space free up where player turnover will be easier to facilitate. But given that, it heightens the importance for Leeds to know, one way or another, whether Arthur is willing to commit himself to the club for two years, or, indeed, one. There needs to be clarity on that situation for the future plans of the club, and a get-out clause simply does not provide that.
