Leeds United have been fined £150,000 by The Football Association for homophobic chanting by their supporters during the March 11 match with Brighton & Hove Albion
Sustained homophobic chanting at Elland Road during Brighton & Hove Albion’s March visit has landed Leeds United with a £150,000 fine. The Whites have accepted the sanction imposed and pledged to redouble their efforts in stamping out homophobia.
A hearing was held on August 10 and an independent regulatory commission assessed evidence of the chanting and representations from Leeds on the action taken before, during and after the game. The commission felt any planning taken by United in anticipation of derogatory chanting in the game was insufficient.
A club statement said: “Leeds United accepts the £150,000 fine imposed by the FA regarding homophobic chanting at our fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion in March. Over recent years, we have worked hard to eradicate homophobia in our community with the launch of Marching Out Together, sponsorship of Leeds Pride and various activities in local schools.
As well as a fine, United have also been handed an action plan by The FA. This has instructed Leeds to acknowledge this charge across its media channels, condemn the chanting and reiterate those responsible were potentially committing a criminal offence.
