Twenty thousand acre-feet! Sounds like the lake will raise a huge amount, right? Whereas any increase is positive, keep in mind how much the church uses.
An acre foot raises one acre by one foot. 20,000 acre feet raises 20,000 acres by one foot. Great Salt Lake has about 1600 square miles. 640 acres make a square mile, so the lake is about 1,024,000 acres. 20,000 is about .01953 , or 2% of the whole lake. So this donation will raise the whole lake by about 2% of a foot, or about a quarter of an inch.
According to a recent Tribune article, the LDS Church uses 68% of the water that would otherwise flow into the lake. If that number is accurate, this is like making a big deal over practically nothing. C’mon brethren, you can do better...
