Re: “It’s a book, not a belief system — We are in danger of fumbling away our children’s futures, America’s ideals,” by Shirley Robinson, Aug. 19 Opinion., thank you so much for publishing Robinson’s words in your opinion section. She speaks for so many. Reading, thinking about and discussing books lift us to a higher level.

There are so many important lessons associated with this man’s story. This book should be considered for classes in every middle or high school.Re: “Keep message alive: Read books out loud — Educator and author Jim Trelease spread the news that hearing words gave children a huge boost in school,” by Christopher de Vinck, Aug. 20 Opinion.

Jim Trelease, like many a visionary before him, had not been appreciated in his own time. The 32-million-word gap that he talked about between the student who is read to and the one who isn’t is a plight of society. We know that if you do not read at a fourth grade level by the fourth grade, you’re not likely to ever catch up.

However, since no one will make a profit, it will likely never see the light of day, and we will all continue to suffer from the effects of poverty and the crime it augments, and that 32-million-word gap.I was educated in the St. Louis public school system in the 1950s and 1960s when it was a national leader in excellence.
