Hamilton was publicly silent for several weeks after Abu Dhabi, and there was widespread speculation that he was done with racing—that he would walk away. “I, for sure, considered whether I wanted to continue,” he confirms. “He was in a dark place,” says Hobson, explaining how she had asked him to join her and Lucas for Christmas in the Caribbean. When Hamilton demurred, she told him that if he didn’t come, she would go to him; in the end, he came.
