Life turns around for 4-year-old Allen ISD boy after liver transplant
His family is encouraging the community to give back during the holidays, while raising awareness about Alagille syndrome.
The nightmare started after doctors began questioning the lab results of Jessica and Sergio Prieto’s baby boy Axel soon after he was born. The findings were not good; the couple learned their son had severe liver problems. Axel, born on Christmas Eve in 2017, was diagnosed with Alagille syndrome, a rare, life-threatening disease that stops the liver from developing enough ducts to properly drain bile.
His mom said most of his life was spent at the hospital and at doctors’ appointments undergoing treatments and “every therapy you can think of — speech therapy, feeding therapy, physical therapy.”For the next 11 months, Axel’s parents waited for a donor’s liver as they watched their son’s health decline. Then the call fromHis mom said within a few days of the surgery, Axel’s energy, color and personality came to life.
