On Wednesday, he released a statement criticizing Trump’s handling of protests that have erupted across the country following the killing of George Floyd in police custody last week. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio defended his police department Thursday afternoon in response to repeated questions about officers’ forceful arrests of peaceful protesters out past curfew the night before.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” Black said as he prayed at the start of the ceremony, which comes before a memorial service in Minneapolis later Thursday. Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was captured on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck, made a mistake, McCall said in his post.
