Liverpool might have successfully overseen an £150m midfield overhaul this summer, but they were not able to complete all of their desired incoming transfer business.

While their senior group of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez is one of the strongest defensive quartets in the Premier League, it is not as sturdy a quota as it would have been seen previously.
If they had signed a centre-back this summer, such a player would not have been first-choice considering the options already in place in Anfield. Meanwhile, the left-sided attributes would have presented the player as a potential option as a hybrid left-back in the Reds’ new 3-2-2-3 formation. Understandably, with no senior defenders leaving the club this summer, Liverpool had no desire to spend £43m on such a squad player.
Since then, he has started for the Reds in their 2-1 win away at Wolves and 3-1 League Cup victory over Leicester City, claiming an eye-catching assist in the latter, and hasn’t looked out of place at all as part of Klopp’s first team squad.
