Leanne Kiernan has had a difficult 18 months but she has showed exactly why Matt Beard was so keen to bring her to Liverpool
When Matt Beard called Leanne Kiernan into his office to tell her she would be making her first Women's Super League start of the season against West Ham United, the Liverpool striker - by her own admission - "couldn't stop smiling".
"I've worked for the last five months to get back into the starting XI. It's been amazing, I've really enjoyed it. My family is up in the crowd there, so it was really nice to celebrate with them." It was a move that paid dividends for both parties, with Liverpool's new no. 9 scoring 14 goals to help the Reds win promotion back to the WSL; a feat that saw Kiernan named the club's Player of the Season.
It was fitting, then, that Kiernan ran to celebrate with Beard on the touchline after scoring against the Hammers on Sunday. And it's clear the Liverpool boss is hopeful this could be just the start of a fruitful spell in front of goal for the striker.
