“London is a high priorityA second former intelligence officer said it was “plausible” that Putin was attempting to infiltrate the UK following the launch of Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine.. “The UK has previously had such Russian ‘illegals’ discovered.”investigation based on hundreds of pages of US intelligence documents, internal FBI emails, and testimony from dozens of intelligence sources from the UK, US and Ukraine.
The documents show how US federal agents concluded he “is an asset for the Russian FSB” citing as proof intercepted correspondence between the businessman and the FSB.on condition of anonymity, said: “[He] is believed to be an asset of the Russian FSB.” The official added that the Ukrainian businessman has been a subject of interest in the US for his alleged links to organised crime and foreign intelligence agencies.
The news reignites security concerns about the scheme – and more widely about the presence of suspected Russian assets in the UK. Western intelligence officials expressed their anger that the man is now living freely in London. In a speech in November last year, the MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said a massive number of Russian officials had been expelled from countries across the world, including over 600 from Europe of which more than 400 were judged to be spies.
“This has struck the most significant strategic blow against the Russian Intelligence Services in recent European history,” he said. “And together with coordinated waves of sanctions, the scale has taken Putin by surprise.”pose new questions around Government security and the differing tactics used by Russian intelligence agencies to infiltrate the UK.
