Nurses and hospitals in London celebrate the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, a nurse who became famous for implementing hygienic standards for nursing to combat infectious diseases
To commemorate the bicentenary of Florence Nightingale's birth an image of her and a message in support of the NHS is projected at St Thomas' Hospital, following the outbreak of coronavirus, London, Britain, May 11, 2020.
Nightingale became famous after she and a small team of nurses travelled to modern-day Istanbul in 1854 to treat British soldiers wounded in the Crimean War, in which British, French and Ottoman forces fought the Russian Empire. Throughout her life, Nightingale stressed the vital importance of good hygiene and cleanliness and her advice to wash hands thoroughly to prevent infection remains central, including in the fight against the new coronavirus.
