Robert Garcia, former Long Beach mayor, helped inaugurate a new Long Beach Memorial Day event on Sunday, May 28, honoring men and women who lost their lives in service to their country.

The sculpture was commissioned by the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association and installed in 2004. In 1943, the Marine Corps began enlisting Black men who went for training at Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
