Several dozen people gathered Thursday morning in Laveen under brisk and windy weather for a ribbon-cutting ceremony inaugurating the Cesar Chavez Community Center.
The new two-story, 34,000-square-foot facility situated across from South Mountain at Cesar Chavez Park offers something for everyone regardless of age or ability, officials promised. In attendance were Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari and Councilmember Carlos Garcia.To date, the city has spent $14.8 million on the project, according to city spokesperson Adam Waltz.
“Long overdue for the neighborhood, for the community,” Avila said, as she carried her 2-year-old grandson. “There’s really nothing in the area for … so, it’s really nice to see that there’s something that’s provided… for the community to have equal opportunity.”Zahira Rangel, facility director, sighed as she spoke about finally opening doors to the community following pandemic-related setbacks.
