Story of a gay couple’s bond through the decades has been a labor of love for playwright Tom Swift and the PlayGround theater developer.
“A Marriage” is both about what the title suggests and a lot more than that.
The play has a long life story of its own. It started in PlayGround, the Berkeley theater company that gives its writers pool a topic once a month and four days to write a 10-minute play inspired by that prompt. Six plays are chosen each month for a Monday night staged reading, and at the end of the six-month season, six of the 36 plays from those readings are given a full production in Best of PlayGround.
More than one of the short plays that Swift wrote back then found their way into “A Marriage,” either as building blocks for scenes or simply as inspiration. Reddy is a fellow PlayGround playwright who has also premiered plays with TheatreFIRST, where “A Marriage” has been in development since at least 2019. TheatreFIRST gave “A Marriage” a Zoom premiere in mid-2021, but the play taking the stage now is radically different from the online iteration.
