Ivan Melendez caps regular season by tying Texas HR record
“It would mean everything to me just knowing how many prestigious baseball players have played for this program,” Melendez said earlier this week of breaking Russell’s record. “I don’t like spotlighting myself. I just want to win, go deep in the playoffs, hopefully win a national championship and go from there. I think it’d be great to have, but go deep in the playoffs.”
Melendez leads the nation in home runs and slugging percentage and ranks second in batting average and runs batted in and third in on-base percentage . The slugging and on-base percentages would also stand as new Texas standards if they held, though he’s got some work to do to eclipse the program-record 112 runs driven in by Scott Bryant in 1989.
Bryant’s lofty record aside, Melendez has already authored one of the greatest offensive seasons in school history. He’s blended otherworldly power with world-class discipline, tallying more walks than strikeouts , and has reached base in 53 of 54 games, including 22 straight. Once an overlooked Odessa College masher trying to prove himself, Melendez might just be the most popular athlete on the Forty Acres at the moment. And he’s learning to embrace the fame – protracted post-game autograph sessions, a sore writing hand, even the occasional gift.
“It’s definitely life-changing,” Melendez said. “I’ve never experienced anything like this. I’ve never had to deal with, you know, things like this. But I enjoy it because they show how supportive they are. I enjoy the fans. Some fan gave me a T-shirt the other day, I thought that was pretty cool.”
