They can preside over civil and misdemeanor trials but not felony criminal trials.
In October, Pettit, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, was recalled to active duty to serve as the Circuit Judge for the Southwest Judicial Circuit for the Navy-Marine Corps Trial Judiciary. Pettit has been actively involved in leadership in several legal professional organizations, including president of the Hon. William B. Enright Inn of Court and a director on the Federal Bar Association’s Board of Directors. She has also served as a lawyer representative on the Southern District of California Court, working with the bench and court leadership on various issues that affect the court’s operations.
