For several months, Fox News treated Donald Trump like yesterday's news. But now the former president has come roaring back at the popular network for conservative viewers, most notably since his indictment in New York on hush-money charges.
The Trump revival was on display Tuesday night, when Tucker Carlson devoted his entire prime-time program to a “historic interview” with him, promising more excerpts on Wednesday. It was two weeks after Sean Hannity similarly gave Trump extensive airtime.
“He’s getting attention, he’s getting ratings, and cable news needs it because they’ve been down,” Hall said.Records released as part of Dominion Voting Systems $1.6 billion defamation case against the network and its parent company, Fox Corp., show that Fox repeatedly aired false allegations about the 2020 presidential elections as part of a bid to win back viewers angered that the network had called Arizona for Joe Biden on election night.
Trump’s higher profile also coincides with his growing strength in polls of Republican voters, according to the network. March 5-11 was the first week this year where the name “DeSantis” received more mentions than “Trump” on Fox, Media Matters said. Others recognized Trump’s potency for their viewers as well: The same week, Trump was mentioned 925 times on MSNBC, compared to 268 for DeSantis.

Look who's back: Donald Trump's big return to Fox NewsFor several months, Fox News treated Donald Trump like yesterday's news. But the former president has come roaring back to the channel most favored by conservatives, as most recently seen by Tucker Carlson's hour-long friendly interview on Tuesday. Until Sean Hannity's similar interview two weeks ago, Trump hadn't been interviewed on the network since last September. Fox didn't even carry his November announcement that he was running again for president in full on the network. The return has been most pronounced since Trump's indictment by a Manhattan grand jury. Fox says that it's following the news, not necessarily the strong ratings that Trump delivers.

Fox shareholder sues Rupert Murdoch, other directors over 2020 election coverageA Fox Corp shareholder sued Chairman Rupert Murdoch and four other board members on Tuesday, saying they failed to stop Fox News from reporting falsehoods about the 2020 U.S. presidential election that damaged its credibility and prompted lawsuits. Shareholder Robert Schwarz alleged in the lawsuit filed in Delaware Chancery Court that the directors breached their duties to ensure that Fox followed its own ethical standards and avoided reputational risk, and instead sought to keep supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump tuned in. 'FOX knew – from the Board on down – that Fox News was reporting false and dangerous misinformation about the 2020 Presidential election, but FOX was more concerned about short-term ratings and market share than the long-term damages of its failure to tell the truth,' he said in the lawsuit, which did not say how many shares he owned.
