EXCLUSIVE: Here is the first trailer for Italian director Gianni Amelio’s Venice Golden Lion Contender Lord Of The Ants inspired by the real-life story of persecuted gay, left-wing intellectu…

Lord Of The AntsThe poet, playwright, academic and director – who had been part of the anti-fascist resistance during World War Two – found himself caught in the crosshairs of the Italian justice system in the late 1960s after he was prosecuted and sentenced to nine years in prison on trumped charges related to his relationship with a younger man.

He was the only person ever found guilty in Italy of the crime of “plagio”, covering the act of “brainwashing” or “mind control”, which was introduced to Italy’s penal code by Benito Mussolini’s fascist government in 1930, to then be removed in 1981. The conservative family of Braibanti’s young lover pressed “plagio” charges against the academic and writer, saying their son had been brainwashed into the relationship. Braibanti’s imprisonment was a cause celebre at the time.

Elio Germano plays a journalist covering the trial, who tries to piece together the truth of the case, coming up against censorship and prejudice in the process. Award-wnning actor Luigi Lo Cascio co-stars as Braibanti. UK-Italian newcomer Leonardo Maltese plays the young man at the heart of the trial, who is kidnapped by his family and subjected to coercive treatments in a psychiatric hospital.

The drama is produced by Simone Gattoni at Kavac Film and Giuseppe Caschetto at IBC Movie in co-production with Moreno Zani and Malcom Pagani at Tenderstories and with the backing of Rai Cinema. The Match Factory handles international sales.
