Aragorn's feelings about becoming king were very different between the Lord of the Rings books and movies, but these changes were for the better.
A significant detail about Aragorn's story in The Lord of the Rings was changed for the movies, greatly improving his overall character arc. Typically, changes from J.R.R. Tolkien's canon are criticized, especially when they are done only for dramatic effect. In the case of Aragorn, several dramatic, and arguably unnecessary, modifications were made to his story, but some actually made him a more sympathetic character.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT There was not enough time for the Lord of the Rings movies to dive deep into Aragorn's past, but Peter Jackson's story still established him as the beaten-down ranger. This aligned reasonably well with his book counterpart, but "Strider" was more reluctant to become king in the movies. He had an almost embarrassed way of approaching the reveal that he was the heir of Gondor.
Aragorn Himself Had Elendil’s Sword Reforged In The LOTR Books This was not the case in the Lord of the Rings books. From the beginning, Aragorn knew and accepted it was his destiny to be King of Gondor, and was eager for the day he could finally take his rightful place. Indeed, instead of the pieces of Elendil's sword, Narsil, being displayed at Rivendell, Aragorn carried them with him everywhere he went in the books.
Aragorn had been raised in Rivendell by Elrond, who always ensured the young boy understood his destiny in Middle-earth. This meant that when Aragorn learned Sauron's One Ring had emerged from hiding, he knew that the day he would reclaim his throne was drawing nearer. After everything that happened with Isildur, Aragorn would have to prove himself before being accepted as king. The war against Sauron was his moment, so he reforged his ancestor's sword as a symbol of his coming.
Why The LOTR Movies Were Right To Change Aragorn’s Story Aragorn's story in the Lord of the Rings books was a thing of Arthurian legend, but his confidence came across as unsympathetic for a modern hero. On the other hand, if the exiled ruler feared repeating his ancestor's mistakes and, therefore, was reluctant to take the throne, it would be a sign that he would make a modest king.
