Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed a cruel penalty rule that Louis van Gaal implemented at the club, which saw him dropped for spot kicks in favour of centre-half Phil Jones
On a recent episode of The Stick to Football podcast, the Manchester United legend - alongside Ian Wright, Roy Keane, Gary Neville, and Jill Scott - spilt the beans on a peculiar rule the Dutchman implemented about spot kicks. He explained: "For the forwards, if you're the penalty taker - if you miss - you're the back of the queue.
"So for the first game of the season, I was like number eight penalty taker." Adding to the comedy of the situation, Rooney revealed: "Phil Jones went into the game as the penalty taker and you've got me and Van Persie." Rooney's exceptional talent was evident from his early days. The goal made him the Premier League's youngest-ever goal scorer at the time, although this record has since been broken by James Milner and James Vaughan. Manchester United would acquire the star striker's services in 2004, with Rooney enjoying an outstanding thirteen-year stint at Old Trafford.
