Love, Victor is coming to Disney+ with a new season available to stream this June. Inspired by and set in the same world as the 2018 film Love, Simon, the coming-of-age series premiered on Hulu in June 2020 when many were stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, Love, Victor was the most-watched drama on the streaming service during the week of its premiere and was quickly renewed for season 2, which premiered in June 2021.
Michael Cimino leads the cast of the series as the titular Victor, a teenager from a half Puerto Rican, half Colombian-American family who recently relocated from Texas to Atlanta. Love, Victor season 1 focuses on Victor's various struggles related to adjusting to a new city, being a new student at Creekwood High School, as well as his sexual orientation. Love, Victor season 2 is set in the aftermath of Victor coming out as gay and chronicles his relationship with Benji.
Love, Victor was originally developed for Disney+ but moved to Hulu after executives became concerned the show's exploration of "mature themes," such as teen sexuality and alcohol use, were not appropriate for the family-friendly streaming service. Therefore, the decision to bring Love, Victor back to Disney+ returns the show to its original intended home.
The LGBTQ+ show's move comes during Disney's ongoing battle with the state of Florida over the state's “Don’t Say Gay” bill. In an act of political retribution for Disney speaking out against the law, Governor Ron DeSantis just signed a bill abolishing the company's self-governing district in Orlando.
