When concerning Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas missed the optimal chance to show the strength of the Jedi and Palpatine.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith proves that George Lucas missed the opportunity to showcase how powerful both the Jedi Order and Palpatine truly were. While Revenge of the Sith is widely regarded as the best of Lucas' Star Wars prequels, it still has some elements of missed opportunity in regard to what was removed from the film. One such example is the opening act, in which Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi save Palpatine from General Grievous and Count Dooku.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY This sequence that serves as the action-packed start of the film initially clocked in at over an hour long itself and, while the shortened version arguably better served the overall film, it would have been amazing to see. That being said, Lucas' Revenge of the Sith actually features another scene that was drastically shortened and changed from its original which would have better served the film if it was left in its intended state.
The scene then features a fantastic display of choreography as Kit Fisto and Mace Windu try to take down Palpatine. After the stunt actor portraying Fisto is killed, the extended fight moves onto Mace Windu vs Palpatine, which is much more effective than it is in Revenge of the Sith.
A Longer Duel Would Have Truly Demonstrated Palpatine's Power The extended duel proves that Lucas missed the opportunity to show Palpatine's true power in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. The original duel makes the two Jedi that are killed instantly look entirely incompetent due to the strange commitment to editing McDiarmid's face into the sequence. This makes the start of the fight extremely slow, with the Jedi dying to sluggish movements with little to no resistance.
As a result, Palpatine comes across as much more powerful. By having the Jedi look stronger, Palpatine's defeat of them in the quick, confident manner the extended fight portrays only improves his status as a villain. This continues into the 1v1 with Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu, which showcases the Jedi Master using much more fluid choreography akin to the best the prequels have to offer.
