Paul Gorst rounds up the latest from Colombia as the search continues for the father of the Liverpool forward
The father of Liverpool star Luis Diaz could soon be returned safely back to his family after almost a week as a hostage, according to reports in Colombia.
However, sources in Colombia have explained there is some cynicism around those claims and the police chief overseeing the mission has yet to update publicly update on the latest development. “Although Mrs. Marulanda was released a few hours later, the player's father has been kidnapped for five days. We demand that the ELN releases immediately Mr. Luis Manuel Diaz and we say as of now that they are entirely responsible to secure his life and integrity.
He went back to his home in the Crosby area of the city and awaited updates while also speaking to the director of Colombia’s National Police, General William Salamanca, to provide basic details about his father's health with the search then in its early stages. “We can't say for sure, but we don't rule it out either. It's quite possible that they're looking for a chance to escape to that place. We have made progress in the investigation, there are personnel from the Gaula and the Intelligence and Judicial Police who are analysing that information."
The search involved around 230 elite police and army commandos and also included a Black Hawk helicopter and the use of an airplane with heat-detection sensors due to fears the kidnappers had tried to bundle their hostage into nearby Venezuela through the mountainous regions that separates the countries.
"I never struggled with that in my life. It was always my safe place, sometimes my hiding point as a player or as a coach. You are allowed, during these 90-odd minutes, to focus just on that.
