CLEVELAND — Luis Garcia pitched in his first postseason as a rookie in 2020 and his first World Series in 2021, but his first career start at Progressive Field did not go exactly to plan.
Although Garcia eventually settled and completed six innings without allowing another run, the Astros’ offense was unable to pick him up in a 4-1 loss to the Guardians. Last season, Garcia’s splits were favorable in home games. This season, he has a 6-3 record, 4.76 ERA and .221 opponent batting average at Minute Maid Park. After Saturday’s outing, he has a 2-5 record with a 3.07 ERA and .212 opponent batting average in road ballparks.
After relievers Phil Maton and Will Smith each contributed a scoreless inning behind Garcia, the Astros attempted to rally with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. They scored one run on back-to back singles by Alex Bregman and Aledmys Díaz, avoiding a shutout, but could get no more.
