Work continues on a new walkway
A colourful display has been put up at the Nottingham Broad Marsh site as work continues on its redevelopment. The brand new sign, reading: 'Nottingham Broad Marsh', can be seen on a background of patterned leaves and hearts at the city centre site.
It comes as work progresses on a new walkway through the former shopping centre. It is hoped a new green space in Nottingham, featuring a Major Oak sapling planted in the centre, will be completed sometime shortly after the opening of the new central library next year. The regeneration of the former shopping centre, which connects Collin Street to Lister Gate, has been tumultuous over the past decade. Following the recent collapse of its former owner intu, the old shopping centre site was handed back to Nottingham City Council which, upon a public consultation, eventually unveiled a new vision for the condemned site in December last year.
So far a new vision has been thought up, with the help of world-renown urban designer Thomas Heatherwick and his studio, revealing plans for 700 new apartments, a hotel, a new entrance to the caves and a green area known as Lister Square. The project is undoubtedly one of the most important Nottingham has ever faced, shaping the face of the city for years to come.
The ambitious project comes despite the council's initial failed bid for £20m from the Conservative Government's Levelling Up fund, which would have given the authority the required cash to further progress the site. Meanwhile, work on the western side is able to continue.
