Airlines have been criticised in the past by campaigners for delays in bringing in changes to allow more diverse gender options on plane tickets.
Several major US airlines will allow travellers to buy plane tickets with an X gender marker by the end of 2024.
The move marks a significant change for the travel industry which has been criticised for delays in bringing in gender neutral identification. US Senator Ron Wyden, in a letter to Airlines for America, said member airlines committed to the change after he had engaged with the group.Airlines for America represents Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and others.In January, an Arizona mother called out Delta Air Lines after she said she could not buy a plane ticket for her nonbinary child due to the airline's lack of gender options during the booking process.
Dawn Henry, 52, said she was trying to buy a surprise plane ticket for her adult child when she discovered Delta only provides male and female gender options, NBC reported.
