Making picks, deals: Broncos draft edge rusher Nik Bonitto, tight end Greg Dulcich, acquire 2023 third-round pick by ryanohalloran
Last week, Broncos general manager George Paton was asked about the quality of the pass rushers in this year’s NFL draft and if it remained a priority for the club after signing Randy Gregory in free agency.Paton and the Broncos confirmed that philosophy Friday night when they selected Oklahoma outside linebacker Nik Bonitto with their first pick .
Paton’s second trade of the night netted him a third-round pick in 2023 from Indianapolis for No. 96. The Broncos now have eight picks on Saturday: Nos. 115-116 ; Nos. 152, 162 and 179 ; No. 206 ; and Nos. 232 and 234 . “It’s crazy how everything happens,” Bonitto said. “The waiting and getting the call, I couldn’t even hold it back. I can’t wait to get to work.”“They were one of my last visits and just getting the vibe from the staff and all the guys that are upstairs,” he said. “They really feel like they wanted me and I just had a feeling, if I made it to them, I would be blessed enough to get picked by them and that’s what happened.
The ideal scenario for any defense is to have four pass-rushing threats and the Broncos, at least on paper, check that box. By drafting Bonitto, they are also looking ahead because Chubb and Reed are free agents after the season. Asked for his strength as a rusher, Bonitto didn’t hesitate and said: “My speed rush, I feel, is one-of-a-kind.”UCLA tight end Greg Dulcich catches a pass at the NFL football scouting combine, Thursday, March 3, 2022, in Indianapolis.
