Neighbors called 911 after smelling smoke but being unable to find the source.
Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek on Saturday night identified the 91-year-old man who was found dead Saturday morning in a house fire in Easton., remain under investigation as the coroner’s office completes its work, Lysek said.He was was found dead after Easton firefighters entered the South Side home to extinguish a fire, Chief Henry Hennings reports.
They checked on the other half and quickly discovered the man and the fire in the living room, Hennings said. Two other residents of the home were not there at the time, Hennings said. The American Red Cross was notified to potentially assist them, he added. The fire was put out within 5 to 10 minutes, but the home can’t be lived in, Hennings said.Brothers Clay II and Chris Mitman live next door to the home on the other side of a thin walkway.that he had “slightly smelled smoke” and checked his own home.
As firefighters moved from one double home toward the other, Clay Mitman said he approached one of them and said the smell of smoke was strongest in his backyard. Then he noticed a cracked window in the home and pointed that out as well, he said.
