James had to be taken in for emergency surgery not only for the spider bite, but also for the nerve damage he had caused
A walker attempted 'DIY surgery' on a false widow spider bite - only for it to go wrong and for him to almost lose his hand. James Beresford shrugged off what he believed to be a harmless gnat bite while out walking near Swansea with his mate one afternoon.
James, from Swansea, said: "They put me straight in for an emergency operation because my hand was swollen, it looked like a boxing glove. They didn't want my hand getting any bigger because it could have cut the circulation off and I could have ended up losing my hand. James was walking through an overgrown field with his mate when he felt a 'pinch' but brushed it off thinking it was a harmless bite. But eight hours later his hand doubled in size and formed a green scab. After popping it, he went to Morriston Hospital's A&E department in Swansea.
"I couldn't move it, I didn't have the use of my thumb. I noticed a green scab, I sterilised a drawing pin and I pierced it just to take the green out and squeeze some pus.
