A man charged with killing a fellow prisoner at Atlantic County’s jail was found standing over the bloodied victim in the cell they shared, according to investigators.
Detectives with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office responded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, located in Mays Landing, shortly after midnight on Wednesday after being notified of the killing, the office reported in a press release. Aahznier Hayes, 22, of Westampton, is charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of his cellmate, Kenneth Raymond, 52, of Ventnor, according to the prosecutor’s office.A corrections officer found Raymond bloodied and unconscious on the floor of his cell with Hayes standing over him, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed with the charges.
Hayes’ hands and clothing were bloody and more blood was found on the cell floor and walls, investigators said.Hours earlier, Hayes told Raymond that he wanted to fight him, a witness told investigators. The same witness reported seeing Hayes later punching, kicking and stomping Raymond, according to the affidavit.Hayes was placed in the jail June 20 on second-degree counts of sexual assault and luring, and a third-degree child endangerment charge, according to court records.
