As he approached, the officer saw Borrero under the vehicle and heard a reciprocating saw, the tool often used by thieves to remove a catalytic converter.
Catalytic converters are stolen from vehicles and sold to scrap metals yard for the precious metals — rhodium, platinum and palladium — used to make them.
As the officer confronted the men and identified himself with his badge displayed, Borerro emerged from under the vehicle with the saw in hand, Amato said. The officer took Borrero to the ground, causing Borrero to drop the saw. A struggle ensued and Borrero struck the officer as the second man pulled Borrero from the officer’s grip.
Borrero and his accomplice managed to jump into their vehicle and flee as the officer was struck by the door of the vehicle as it sped off. While fleeing toward the New Jersey Turnpike, Borrero crashed into a police cruiser and a parked vehicle. The getaway vehicle was later found abandoned in Newark.
