UPDATE: Police identified a New Jersey man who is charged with boating under the influence after a boat crash on the Schuylkill River sent six people, including two babies, to local hospitals Saturday night. Latest details HERE:
On Saturday around 7:10 p.m., police responded to a reported boat crash on the Schuylkill River underneath the 34th Street Bridge. When they arrived they spotted a boat with nine people on it that had crashed into the bridge's substructure.
Two 1-year-old babies and seven adults -- ranging in age from 23 to 31 -- were on the boat at the time of the crash, police said. The boat's driver, later identified as 29-year-old Parminder Singh of Pennsauken, New Jersey, was behind the vessel's helm as firefighters removed the passengers, according to investigators.Sign up for NBC Philadelphia newsletters.
One of the infants was taken to the hospital and treated for a nose bleed while the second baby was also taken to the hospital for an evaluation. Four of the adult passengers also suffered head, ankle and back injuries and were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Two of the other adult passengers were not injured.
Investigators later determined Singh was boating under the influence at the time of the crash. He was arrested and charged with BUI, assault, reckless endangerment and other related offenses.
