Safiullah Asif was knocked down in Tameside and later died in hospital

A financial services company boss has denied racing with a work colleague in their cars before an eight-year-old boy was knocked down and killed. Thomas McGrath, 24, told a jury there was no 'agreement' or 'encouragement' on his part to race with Kevin Jones after they finished work.

The jury has already been told that Jones, 36, of Ashton New Road in Beswick, east Manchester, has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at a previous hearing. Mr McGrath, of Gorton Road in Reddish, Stockport, denies charges of causing death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving. He told the jury he finished his shift at around 8pm on July 23 and was planning to pick up his partner at the time in his Volkswagen Polo then go to Asda to do a 'weekly shop'. CCTV, the jury heard, showed Jones, a work colleague of Mr McGrath's, walking out to his BMW parked outside Debt Clear on Charges Street.

"He pulled a silly face at me," said the defendant of Jones. "It would be nothing out of the ordinary. He would do it in the office to make people laugh." He said he was then waiting for Jones to move off but he didn't, so he said he pulled away in his car. As they got onto Ryecroft Street, where the collision occurred, Mr McGrath said he wasn't aware Jones was behind him. He said he accepts exceeding the speed limit, saying he was going to pick up his then partner and was 'slightly late'.

"That is my error," he said of his speed. "I can only apologise for that. I should not have exceeded the speed limit.
