WATCH: A man driving a stolen police car jumped out of the vehicle during a high-speed chase while the car was traveling at a speed close to 70 mph. The car, meanwhile, with no one at the helm, kept going, eventually crashing right into a light pole.

Fox 11 was live tracking the speed chase in its helicopter when the suspect opened the driver-side door and leaped onto the road beneath him, causing him to smack his head on the asphalt and slide several yards before coming to a stop. While the live video shows the speedometer at about 50 mph when the man jumps out of the vehicle, Fox 11 reported that the car was actually traveling at about 70 mph. The man reportedly jumped after a spike strip destroyed one of the cruiser's rear tires. Clearly injured, the suspect managed to stand up and start running away from approaching officers before the video ended. He was eventually apprehended and later died from his injuries at the hospital, according to Fox 11.The chase began just before noon Tuesday, with the police cruiser headed eastbound on the 138 Freeway in the Antelope Valley.
