A Brooklyn man was fatally struck by a car Monday night as he was attempting to cross a busy road in Toms River, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Tuesday.
Officers were called to the intersection of Whitesville Road and Jumping Brook Drive around 8:45 p.m. and found that the man, identified as Howard Dasheff, 67, had been hit by a car being driven by a 22-year-old Jackson resident, Billhimer said in a statement. Dasheff was taken toDasheff was wearing dark clothing when he tried to cross Whitesville Road outside a designated crosswalk, authorities said.
The driver who hit him remained on the scene and did not show any “outward signs” of impairment, Billhimer said. As of Tuesday afternoon, the driver was not facing any charges. The incident remained under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Toms River Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, officials said.
