A Dallas County jury convicted 34-year-old Phillip Mabry on Friday night. He faces up to life in prison for the death of Officer Mitchell Penton on Feb. 13, 2021.near Walnut Hill Lane when a speeding Kia Forte slammed into the back of his squad car, police said. The collision propelled the car forward, fatally striking Penton.
The impact sent Penton flying through the air, prosecutors said. He had head trauma, a broken leg and exposed bone, and blood pooling in his mouth, according to police and a paramedic. His squad car was the last in a line of vehicles and flares blocking the scene of an accident, and Penton had moved his vehicle even farther back to protect other officers, according to testimony.
