Man killed by La Mesa police appeared to try to fire handgun at officer, police say [Breaking]
by a La Mesa police officer on Sunday took out a handgun and “pointed it directly at an officer” but the firearm apparently malfunctioned, according to a San Diego police lieutenant investigating the shooting.
He was being sought in connection with a burglary that occurred in San Diego, said San Diego police homicide Lt. Steve Shebloski.“We recovered numerous shell casings at the scene and at this point we believe they are all from the shooting officer’s gun,” Shebloski said in an interview.
“As the suspect continued to run toward University Avenue, it appeared the suspect was trying to manipulate or clear the firearm of the malfunction. The officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect in the upper body multiple times,” Shebloski said in a press release. “This incapacitated the suspect and caused him to drop the firearm.”A passing vehicle apparently was struck by the officer’s round, but the motorist wasn’t injured.
