The workplace was fined £160,000 after the incident left the employee in a wheelchair
A man had to have both of his legs amputated after an industrial accident. Andrew McAuley, from Runcorn , was an employee of William Stobart & Son Limited when he was picking orders at the firm’s Appleton Thorn warehouse, near Warrington . The 64-year-old was working close to a forklift truck which was being used to load pallets of slate tiles onto a waiting truck. The FLT was carrying two pallets, one on top of the other, with the top pallet not being secured.
After William Stobart & Son Limited, of Ashville Way Industrial Estate, Sutton Weaver, Runcorn, pleaded guilty to breaching a regulation of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the company was fined £160,000. It was also ordered to pay £4,478 costs at a hearing at Warrington Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 2024. The prosecution was supported by HSE enforcement lawyer Sam Tiger and paralegal Sarah Thomas.
