Thomas Sibick was sentenced to 50 months in prison for Jan. 6 assault on officer.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson last week. “I have grappled with these questions for the better part of two years.”

“I really am sorry,” he said. “Please forgive me, please.” He called Fanone “the man I aspire to be.” Again, he said, “I still wonder why I did what I did.” Before issuing her sentence, Jackson said she understood why Sibick couldn’t explain himself — “There seems to be no good reason” to attack a trapped, injured police officer. But she bristled at what she called repeated attempts to “spin,” “trivialize,” and “whitewash” his behavior as a thwarted attempt to help Fanone.“You may persuade other people, you may have persuaded yourself, but you haven’t persuaded me, because it wasn’t true,” Jackson said before sentencing Sibick.

“This was a deliberate act,” she said. “The videos just don’t show a person who is ... wild and out of control.” Other people in the crowd, she noted, were “horrified” by the attack on Fanone and yelled for the assaulters to stop; Sibick did not.that formed on the Capitol’s West Terrace, trying to push past a line of police officers guarding that entrance to the building. He got hold of a police riot shield passed through the crowd and posed for a photo with it.
